Competition Ranking Rules

Dancesport Heristage competitions have an articulated system of age groups and grades, allowing couples to achieve satisfying results competing in competitions against other couples of similar age and level.

Nonetheless, there are essentially three major cateories to which all competitors pertain, and these are:

1) Adult (for all couples over the age of 16, except Professionals)
2) Professional (for all professional couples over 18 years old)
3) Under 16 (for all couples under the age of 16)

All other categories fall under these three main groups as sub-categories:

Adult - Adult, Under 21, Youth, Senior (all Senior categories)
Professional - Professional, Masters Professional (all Master categories)
Under 16 - Juvenile 1 and 2, Junior 1 and 2

Therefore, the principle competition categories which are the main point of reference for these categories and sub-cateogires are:
- Open Adult, per the Adult group
- Open Professional, for the professional group
- Open Under 16, for the Under 16 group

Even though the sub-categories and classes are important because they stimulate competitors and to allow a comparison with other dancers of similar level, the combined competitions above are the true measure of a couples level and through these major competitions the competition performance model is generated.

How will the ranking system be updated? For the Dancesport Heristage rankings for Open B, Open Categories and A Class, the new ranking will take into account both the ranking points accumulated in the sub-category and graded competitions and those achieved in the Open Adult championships, Open Professional championships and Under 16 competitions. The rankings will be formulated as follows:

Ranking 1st List - The best results (best 6 for B Open and Open competitions and top 3 for A class): 2nd List - The best three results obtained at the Championships in the Open Adul categories:
Juv 1 B Open = Juv 1 B Open + Under 16 Open
Juv 2 B Open = Juv 2 B Open + Under 16 Open
Jun 1 B Open = Jun 1 B Open + Under 16 Open
Jun 1 A = Jun 1 A + Under 16 Open
Jun 2 B Open = Jun 2 B Open + Under 16 Open
Jun 2 A = Jun 2 A + Under 16 Open
Youth B Open = Youth B Open + Adult Open
Youth A = Youth A + Adult Open
Youth Open = Youth Open + Adult Open
Under 21 Open = Under 21 Open + Adult Open
Adult B Open = Adult B Open + Adult Open
Adult A2 = Adult A2 + Adult Open
Adult A1 = Adult A1 + Adult Open
Senior B Open = Senior B Open + Adult Open
Senior A = Senior A + Adult Open
Senior Open = Senior Open + Adult Open

Ranking Calculations

Graded Rankings: The Graded Ranking System algorithm is based on two factors - position obtained and participation points. The last-placed couple gains one point, and every couple positioned higher in the competitiongains one extra point (in a competition with 12 couples competing, the last-placed couple earns 1 point whereas the first-placed couple wins 12). 3 Participation points are awarded to every couple for each event they compete in during the year.

Open Rankings: Open Ranking competitions tend to have a higher number of competitors and necessitate more complex calculation. In this case the algorithm applied is the following:

Position Points - just like in the Graded Rankings, participation points are based on the number of couples beaten. However, the maximum number of competitors is also capped at 150, so every couple from 151st position onwards recieves 50 points and the 150th placed couple will receive 51 points. Round Bonus - 5 points are applied for every round passed (the points are applied by position from 120th, 96th, 48th, 24th, 12th and 6th.

Position Bonus - from the round of 24 onwards, extra points are applied for every position achieved (2 points in the 24, 4 points in the semifinal and 8 points in the final). These points are always relative to the 24th position. The formula used to calculate these points is:
Position bonus (2 for quarter final, 4 for semifinal and 8 for final) x (24 (relative position) + 2 (the 24th position starts with 2 points) - Achieved position) so for the 10th placed couple 4 x (24 + 2 - 10) = 64
The following table shows the calculation of these rankings:

Position Base Points Round Bonus Extra Points Total
160 50 0 0 50
100 101 5 0 106
60 141 10 0 151
40 161 15 0 176
22 179 20 8 207
11 190 25 60 275
4 197 30 176 403
1 151-1+50 = 200 30 for final 8 x (24-1+2) = 200 200+30+200 = 430
